Introductions

Gavin Payne - Transparent Data Encryption - the whys, hows and whens

The presentation will be looking at a new feature in SQL Server, Transparent Data Encryption - the ability to encrypt databases to protect against media theft without applications or code ever knowing.  Starting with an overview of encryption in general and SQL Server's own internal encryption infrastructure, I will then give a demo of implementing and managing TDE, along with moving encrypted databases.  Finally, I will discuss some of the uses for TDE along with the challenges and constraints it brings.

Dave Ballantyne - TSQL Techniques

So, you’ve got good design, got correct indexes, hell, you’ve even got good sargability.  But your system is still slow.  What’s the problem? The chances are your SQL Code is asking too much of your hardware.

In this session, I will demonstrate why a set-based mindset is so critical to performance and some simple techniques to lower resource usage through better use of TSQL code.

Red Gate will be sponsoring tonights event and we have a licence for their new SQL Source Control product to give away.  All you have to do it create a review on your blog, and mail me the link.  The winner of the best article (As judged by Red Gate) will receive the licence, you will have to attend the meeting to collect the prize.
